Washington - Arabstoday
Instead of closing for the Cincinnati Reds, Ryan Madson will miss the 2012 season because of a torn ligament in his right elbow. Madson returned to Cincinnati and was examined by team medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek. The Reds said Saturday that Kremchek told general manager Walt Jocketty the ligament was torn from the bone of Madson's right elbow. "We talked to the team. We all have to stay positive," Jocketty said. "We have alternatives internally that we will sort through in the next few days." Madson agreed in January to a one-year contract guaranteeing $8.5 million, after a $44 million, four-year deal to stay with Philadelphia collapsed in November. The 31-year old reported discomfort in his elbow at the start of spring training but insisted it was an annual ailment that he had always worked through. He didn't pitch in any exhibition games. Madson pitched batting practice Tuesday and had been scheduled to throw again Friday. "He looked very good on Tuesday. He felt some tightness the next day," Jocketty said. "He felt fine all spring until lately." Kremchek explained to Jocketty that bleeding made it appear the tear was recent. Madson's contract calls for a $6 million salary this year, of which $2 million is deferred until Nov. 1 and $2 million until Nov. 1, 2013. The agreement includes an $11 million mutual option for 2013 with a $2.5 million buyout. He saved 32 games in 34 chances last year for the Phillies and was to replace Francisco Cordero as the Reds' closer. Sean Marshall, obtained from the Chicago Cubs in December, becomes a leading candidate for closer. Hard-throwing Aroldis Chapman could be shifted back to a bullpen role. Rays pitcher's bail at $1M Rays pitcher Matt Bush is being held on more than $1 million bail on charges that he left the scene of an accident that seriously injured a motorcyclist in Punta Gorda, Fla. Bush made his first court appearance Saturday. Charlotte County Circuit Court records show that Bush remained in custody on multiple DUI-related charges and counts of leaving the scene of an injury accident and driving with a suspended license. The Florida Highway Patrol said Bush kept driving after hitting the motorcycle. The motorcyclist remains hospitalized. Surgery for Braves' Jones Braves third baseman Chipper Jones will miss the start of his farewell season. Two days after Jones announced this will be his final year, the Braves said he needs arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The procedure will be performed Monday. Jones, 39, will open the season on the disabled list, but the team expects him to miss only the first six games. Chamberlain on trampoline Yankees manager Joe Girardi confirmed that reliever Joba Chamberlain dislocated his right ankle on a trampoline. Chamberlain was hurt while playing with his son Thursday. "I know he did it on the trampoline, that he was bouncing," Girardi said Saturday. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman visited Chamberlain in the hospital and said the 26-year-old pitcher told Cashman he could be back on a mound by July. Etc. Edwin Jackson (1-3 with a 6.88 ERA in five spring starts) allowed 10 runs -- seven earned -- and 11 hits in 32/3 innings as the Nationals lost 12-3 to the Orioles in Sarasota, Fla. Baltimore's Matt Wieters had a three-run homer among his four hits and drove in six runs to send Washington to an 0-10-1 record in its past 11 games. . . . Justin Morneau hit his first two homers of spring training and the Twins connected five times in a 19-4 rout of the Rays in Fort Myers, Fla. Morneau, who has played only 150 games the past two seasons because of several injuries, had five RBIs as the designated hitter. . . . Adam Lind (Anderson Highland) hit a three-run homer and run-scoring triple in the Blue Jays' 9-0 rout of the Braves in Dunedin, Fla. . . . James McDonald held Houston hitless for 51/3 innings, but the Astros scored an unearned run in the 10th inning to beat the Pirates 5-4 in Bradenton, Fla.
