Russia failed to qualify from the group stage of the Tokyo Sevens tournament Saturday after defeats to Wales and Argentina, and despite a win over Kenya. The Bears will now play Hong Kong in the quarterfinal of the bowl competition for knocked-out teams. A narrow 10-7 defeat to Wales was followed by a 22-0 thrashing at the hands of Argentina, before a 26-17 win over Kenya for Henry Paul’s team, who finished third in the group. Elsewhere in the competition, Scotland finished a surprise last in their group after losing to Samoa, South Africa and minnows Portugal. Russia are taking part in the Tokyo Sevens, a World Series event, as a guest team. The Bears failed to secure a permanent berth in the World Series for next season at the Hong Kong Sevens tournament earlier this month.
