Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera required stitches to close a gash on his face caused by a ground ball Monday, the team said. Cabrera was playing third base during the first inning of the Tigers' 4-3 spring training loss to Philadelphia when a sharp grounder off the bat of Hunter Pence took a bad hop. The ball bounced and struck Cabrera underneath his right eye, opening a wound that bled profusely. The Tigers infielder was helped off the field and taken to the training room for evaluation, X-rays and stitches to close the cut, the team said in a statement. No further information was immediately available.
