Cuban world pole vault champion Yarisley Silva has pulled out of next month's indoor world championships after her fiance was hospitalised, her coach said on Monday.
Silva's fiance is Cuban high-jumper Sergio Mestre, who was taken to hospital on February 4 after badly injuring himself in training, according to Cuban national coach Alexandre Navas, as quoted by the Cubadebate website.
Silva, who was also Olympic silver medallist in London four years ago, was preparing for the world championships in Portland from March 17-20 in Europe but stopped training and flew home as soon as she found out the news.
Mestre suffered a spinal injury and the prognostic for his full recovery is "reserved" according to Pavel Pino, the director at country's sports medicine institute.
