
U.S. stocks closed modestly higher Monday after solid earnings from Citigroup, but the rise was tempered by a weak report on retail sales. The dollar lost ground against the euro, the pound, and the yen. Light sweet crude oil for August delivery gained 37 cents to $106.32 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures rose $5.90 to $1,283.50 an ounce. The Dow Jones industrial average moved up 19.96, or 0.13 percent, to 15,484.26. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.31, or 0.14 percent, to 1,682.50. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index gained 7.41, or 0.21 percent, to 3,607.49.
