Gold futures rose modestly Tuesday as equities and the dollar index also made gains. Gold added $5.50 to $1,619.40 per troy ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Silver gained 49 cents to $28.50 per troy ounce, as the dollar index rose 0.29 percent to 82.79 on the International Exchange. The dollar was mixed in Asia and mostly higher in Europe. U.S. equity markets rose slightly Tuesday, the Dow Jones industrial average adding 26 points to 12,127.95. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 7.32 points to 1,285.50. The dollar index added 0.3 percent to 82.81 The euro fell to $1,2454 from Monday's $1.25. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 78.77 yen from Monday's 78.35 yen. The British pound was $1.5379 from $1.5384. The dollar was 1.0375 Canadian dollars from 1.0393 Canadian.
