Gold prices rose modestly on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange Friday, adding $18 and settling at $1,584.90 per troy ounce. Silver added 81 cents and closed at $27.53 per troy ounce. Metals rose as investors shied away from equities with Europe still discussing strategies to gain control of the continent's debt crisis. The dollar index rose 0.28 percent to 82.45 on the Intentional Exchange with the euro falling to $1.2502 from Friday's $1.257. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 79.68 yen from 80.43 yen.
