Gold prices lost $2.40 to settle at $1,640.50 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange Wednesday in late trading. Silver added 12 cents to $29.64 an ounce. The euro rose to $1.2528 from Tuesday's $1.2473. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 78.59 yen from 79.29 yen. The British pound was $1.5879 from $1.588. Against the Canadian dollar, the U.S. dollar was 0.9911 from 0.9914 Tuesday.
