Gold prices slipped on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange after the European Central Bank left its monetary policy unchanged. Following the U.S. Federal Reserve's no-change announcement Wednesday, the ECB disappointed many who had expected the bank in Frankfurt, Germany to announce a stimulus measure, given ECB President Mario Draghi's statement last week that the central bank would do "whatever is needed to preserve the euro." The dollar gained strength in Europe for the second consecutive day. On the International Index, the dollar index gained 0.26 percent to 83.29. A stronger dollar puts pressure on commodities priced in U.S. currency. Gold gave up $16.20 and reached $1,591.10 per troy ounce. Silver ended at $27.08 per troy ounce, off 45 cents. The euro fell to $1.2182 from Wednesday's $1.2227. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 78.22 yen from 78.44 yen. The dollar was mixed in Asia, dropping against the yen, the Australian dollar and the Hong Kong dollar. It was broadly stronger across Europe. The British pound fell to $1.5515 from $1.5536. The dollar rose to 1.0071 Canadian from 1.0055 Canadian.
