Tokyo stocks fell 0.55 percent in the morning session of Monday on profit-taking, but losses were pared after Chinese gross domestic product data turned out to be roughly in line with market expectations.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 101.44 points, from Friday to 18,190.36. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 8.57 points, or 0.57 percent, to 1,497.27.
Decliners were led by rubber, nonferrous metal, steel, and real estate shares.
