Yesterday we celebrated the birth of Dr. Seuss, he of the rhyming books like "The Cat in the Hat," "Green Eggs and Ham" and much more. So in honor of the late great Theodor Seuss Geisel's 108th birthday, we present five facts to know about the author, and encourage everyone to take part in Read Across America by just sitting down and cracking open a good book! Information from Seussville.com. College Writer—Geisel published his first piece under the pseudonym of "Seuss" in Dartmouth's "Jack-O-Lantern" humor magazine in 1925. Children's Books—"And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street" is Geisel's first children's book, published in 1937. Read Across America—This is a national celebration that takes place initially on March 2 as schools, libraries and communities come together to enjoy the benefits and joys of reading. Political Cartoonist—Seuss began writing political cartoons for New York newspaper "PM" in 1941, and eventually published more than 400 cartoons. Lesson Learned—Two of Seuss's more popular books, both of which have been made into movies—"The Cat in the Hat" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!"—are released in 1957 and teach how to read in the former and that Christmas does not come from a store in the latter.
