A dictionary of names of the martyrs of the Revolution for national liberation in the province of Algiers will be finalized on December 11, announced Friday chairman of the office of mujahideen (war veterans) in the province of Algiers which comes under the National Organization of mujahideen (ONM), Abdelmalek Mahious.
"2500 martyrs from the province of Algiers have been identified so far and this figure is set to increase following the preparation of the list of martyrs in the region of Douera" said Mahious in a speech at the cemetery of Eucalyptus, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 53rd anniversary of the events of 17 October 1961 when Algerian emigrants in Paris were bloodily repressed by the French police.
The dictionary should include the names of the martyrs of the province of Algiers will be published "before the end of the current year," he stressed.
After he laid a wreath of flowers at the memorial steles in the municipalities of Eucalyptus and Khraissia and gathered in memory of the martyrs, Mahious spoke of "the painful events of 17 October 1961 in Paris, during which the French authorities executed hundreds of Algerians and inflicted atrocities on thousands of others since they peacefully protested to claim the independence of their country."
The police chief of Paris, Maurice Papon ordered the killing of Algerians who participated in the event, transforming the peaceful march, which brought together nearly 30,000 demonstrators, to a carnage that claimed the lives of thousands of innocent people, he recalled.
The office of mujahideen in the province of Algiers has documented 300 martyrs from Algiers who were thrown into the waters of the Seine, he added.
