Greek archaeologists believe that they have unearthed ancient Greek general and political leader Pericles' wine cup in a northern Athens suburb, according to media reports on Wednesday.
In an article carried by local daily "Ta Nea" (The News), archaeologist Galini Daskalaki said that the item was found in a grave which was found during construction works for a new building in Kifisia district.
It is estimated that it dates back to the Golden era in Greek ancient history of 5th century B.C.
On the ceramic wine cup which measures about eight cm high are inscribed six names and among them Pericles.
Greek archaeologists believe that it could be used by the great Athenian general and political leader, since one of the other names inscribed (Arrifron) was the name of Pericles' grandfather, as well as older brother, and was quite uncommon in ancient Athens.
The wine cup is expected to be put on display in autumn in an Athens museum.
