Iran has become an official member of the International Union of Spelunking, an Iranian official said. Head of the Spelunking Society of Iran Javad Nezamdoust said Iran has won 39 votes out of 41 during the 16th International Congress of Spelunking held in Brno, Czech Republic, from July 21-28. He said five members of the Spelunking Society of Iran participated in the congress aimed at introducing Iranian cavers and spelunkers, the Islamic republic news agency reported. Nezamdoust also expressed hope that Iran's membership at the International Union of Spelunking could promote the scientific level of Iranian cavers and pave the way for introducing Iran's caves across the globe as well as registering particular caves in the World Heritage List.
