The museum of the Roman Theatre of Guelma (537 km east of Algiers) contains thousands of old coins which are true witness of the prestigious past of ancient Calama and the civilizations and cultures that had succeeded each other in this region. As coins are one of the material traces on which archeologists and researchers rely to analyze the life of ancient societies and their political, social, economic and cultural development, the richness of Guelma with this tangible heritage allowed it to be listed among the most ancient inhabited regions in Algeria. From the colonial era to date, the thousands of coins that have been discovered by archeologists represent Numidian, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Muslim civilizations. Despite the weight of years with its deep transformations, wars, decline of civilizations and the emergence of other cultures, Calama’s soil is abounded in gold, silver and bronze coins.
