Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh Al-Damati said Thursday the Giza Sphinx, better known to Egyptians as Abul Hol, will undergo a restoration process as of Friday for two months.
In statements, the minister said the restoration process was part of a periodical maintenance of antiquities in order to keep them against damage.
"The process comes as part of the ministry's policy to restore several antiquity locations nationwide," added the minister.
The Great Sphinx of Giza is a statue of a reclining lion with a human head that stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile, near modern-day Cairo.
It is the largest monolith statue in the world, standing 73.5 m (241 ft) long.
