Turkish leaders attended a ceremony in Ataturk's Mausoleum (Anitkabir) to mark Victory Day in Turkish capital Ankara on Friday. Turkish President Abdullah Gul placed a wreath with red and white carnations on Ataturk's Mausoleum. Signing the Anitkabir special book, Gul noted that "Great Leader Ataturk, we came into your presence with the honor of carrying the Republic into future, on the anniversary of the great victory." Gul received the celebrations in Cankaya Palace. Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu and Deputy Prime Ministers Bulent Arinc, Besir Atalay, Bekir Bozdag and Ali Babacan were among the names who attended the ceremony. Vatan Boulevard in Istanbul was the main road for the celebration parades in the city, which also took place in Ankara, Izmir and other cities across Turkey. The victory on August 30, 1922, over the Greek military was the last big engagement between the two armies. The war began with the Greek invasion of Izmir in May 1919 after the end of World War I with tacit support from the Allies.
