Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with Moldovan candidate for the post of UN Secretary General Natalia Gherman, Spokesman for Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zaid said on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Gherman explained to Shoukry her vision on the future role of the next UN secretary general and the UN in general, he added.
Also, they touched on means of promoting the UN secretary role to handle all issues before the international community, Abu Zaid asserted.
The Moldovan nominee was keen on listening to Shoukry proposals on the UN secretary general.
Gherman stressed the importance of strengthening coordination with Egypt to support her in the vote for the position of the UN secretary general in light of its membership at the UN security council, its status at the regional and international levels and its vital role in dealing with African and Middle Eastern issues.
For his part, the Egyptian foreign minister said that Egypt is keen on selecting the figure qualified for assuming the post, stressing that who occupies the UN secretary general's position should abide by the principle of strict neutrality.
The new UN secretary general has to give priority to supporting developing countries and observing responsibilities of the developed countries in that regard, Shoukry underlined.
Furthermore, they discussed the Moldovan nominee's vision on anti-terror efforts and the refugee crisis and the youths' empowerment as well as fostering the system of international peace and security, Abu Zaid said.
