French President Francois Hollande said on Thursday he understood Britain needed time to prepare for negotiations on quitting the European Union, but that it should be done as soon as possible.
“There cannot be discussions, pre-negotiations before the negotiation but there can be preparation for this negotiation,” he said at a joint news conference with his British counterpart Theresa May in Paris.
“We can understand your newly formed government needs that time,” Hollande said.
He also repeated France’s position that Britain could only have access to the single market if it accepted the EU’s “four freedoms” including the free movement of people.
The Socialist leader also reaffirmed his support for the France’s Le Touquet border agreement with Britain.
