Arab League wants U.N. to curb Syria

The Arab League, after halting its own mission in the country, is pushing the U.N. Security Council to intervene in Syria's violent crackdown on protesters. On Saturday, the Arab League postponed its observer mission in Syria, citing escalating violence at the hand of President Bashar Assad, The Wall Street Journal reported. Arab League officials traveled to New York City Saturday to discuss their peace proposal with the U.N. Security Council, The New York Times reported. The plan outlines Assad's handing off of power to a vice president while an interim government is formed. At least 5,400 people have died since the uprising began in Syria in March, the United Nations said. At least 78 protesters died in the country on Saturday.
