The British Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Alistair Burt today welcomed the National Transitional Council in Libya handing over of power to the first elected body in the country late last night. Libya’s National Transitional Council was the body which represented the Libyan people through the revolution. It handed over power to the General National Congress, the 200-strong body elected in July in Libya’s first democratic elections for 47 years. Welcoming the handover of power Burt, said: “Today is another landmark in the transition from brutal dictatorship to political representation in Libya. As a Minister and a Parliamentarian, I am proud of the role the UK has played in supporting the Libyan people in their struggle to have their democratic voice heard.”
