South Korean President Park Geun-hye is to leave for the United States on Sunday for a summit with President Barack Obama, Yonhap reported. It s Park s first overseas trip since she took office and she ll be heading a large economic delegation. Park s six-day visit to the United States comes amid high tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The United States and South Korea have just concluded massive military exercises. The two countries, along with Japan, remain on high alert for any medium and long-range ballistic missile test by the DPRK. The White House said talks between Obama and Park will include continued co-operation on denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and countering possible military threat from the DPRK. During the visit, the delegation members will also attend an official dinner commemorating the 60th anniversary of the military alliance between Seoul and Washington, and a meeting with their U.S. counterparts that will focus on ways to expand economic cooperation between the two countries. The 51-member business delegation, South Korea s biggest ever, includes the heads of the country s five major industrial conglomerates, including Samsung, Hyundai and LG. South Korea and the United States have already concluded a bilateral free trade agreement. Trade between the two sides exceeded 58 billion dollars last year. Before she arrives in Washington, President Park will visit New York for two days. There, she will meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
