China will not interfere in Taiwan's 2012 elections, a spokesman for the Communist-run mainland said Wednesday. Yang Yi of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office made the remark at a press briefing on cross-Strait negotiations, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. Yi said the negotiations have noting to do with the upcoming elections on Taiwan. He said consensus reached in 1992 serves as a significant basis for negotiations between Taiwan and the mainland. The mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait and Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation held talks in Singapore in 1992 that led to the creation of an accord.
