A reputed mobster who was deported from the United States to his native Canada was shot and killed near Montreal, authorities said.The body of Salvatore "Sal the Ironworker" Montagna was found Thursday on Ile Vaudry, the Montreal Gazette reported.Police sources told the newspaper Montagna appeared to have been shot Thursday morning in Charlemagne, Quebec, just northeast of Montreal, and tried to escape his killer with a desperate move across the frozen Riviere des Prairies.Montagna, 40, was born in Canada and grew up in Sicily. He owned a New York company, Matrix Steel Inc., and is reputed to have put in a brief stint as head of the Bonanno crime family in New York before he was deported in 2009.Police sources told the Gazette Montagna had apparently been shaking down construction companies in the Montreal area.The provincial police force is leading the investigation.
