Chris Young accounted for the game's only runs with a fourth-inning homer Thursday and Arizona escaped a late jam to down the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0. The Diamondbacks snapped a six-game losing streak and dropped the Dodgers 4 1/2 games behind San Francisco in the race for the National League West title. Young's 14th homer of the season made a winner out of Ian Kennedy (12-11), who limited the Dodgers to two hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out seven. Brad Ziegler retired the only two men he faced in the seventh and David Hernandez worked the eighth to keep the shutout going. J.J. Putz came on in the ninth and immediately gave up singles to Adrian Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez. Andre Ethier grounded into a fielder's choice that erased Ramirez at second and allowed Gonzalez to reach third. Putz then got Luis Cruz on a fly ball to shallow left and Juan Rivera on a popup to short to end the game. It was the 27th save for Putz. Clayton Kershaw (12-8) gave up the homer and suffered the loss, allowing nine hits overall with nine strikeouts in six innings.
