Colombia's Yuri Alvear, bronze medallist at the London Olympics last year, claimed the women's -70 kilogrammes title at the world judo championships in Rio de Janeiro on Friday. The 27-year-old, who was regaining the title she had won in 2009, saw off Germany's Laura Vargas in the final. South Korean Seongyeon Kim, who beat France's Olympic champion and double world title holder Lucie Decosse, and Dutch judoka Kim Polling, took bronze. The 32-year-old Decosse is retiring at the end of the action in Rio. Cuba's Asley Gonzalez, runner-up at the 2012 Olympics, took gold in the men's -90kg, with Georgia's Varlam Liparteliani taking silver. The 23-year-old was delivering Cuba their first medal of any hue at these championships. In Friday's closing title match, North Korea's Kyong Sol took the honours in the women's -78kg, with the Netherlands' Marhinde Verkerk picking up the silver medal. Source: AFP
