South Korean Park Taehwan won the men's 800-meter freestyle and New Zealand's Lauren Boyle captured the 1,500 freestyle on first day of the Santa Clara Invitational swim meet. Park on Thursday set a meet record in taking the 800 in 7 mins 52.07 secs, breaking the old mark of 7:52.18 set last year by Canada's Ryan Cochrane, who settled for second behind the Asian standout this year in 7:57.19. Australian Ryan Napoleon was third in 7:59.10 with American Michael Klueh fourth in 8:01.23. Boyle took the 1,500 in 16:21.73 with American Emily Brunemann 1.63 seconds back in second. Venezuela's Andreina Pinto was third in 16:24.16 with China's Zhao Min fourth in 16:56.02. The meet, which continues through Sunday, is the last in the US Grand Prix series, which serves as a tuneup for the upcoming US Olympic trials and for others as training ahead of July's London Olympics.
