Japanese automaker Honda said it's recalling 344,000 minivans after complaints the vehicles abruptly applied the brakes without the driver hitting the pedal. Honda is recalling all 2007 and 2008 Odyssey minivans to fix the problem, found in the vehicle's computer, which causes "heavy and unexpected braking without the driver pressing on the brake pedal and without illumination of the brake lamps," the company told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The New York Times said the problem originates in the Vehicle Stability Assist module. The device is intended to track whether the van is skidding or traveling in a direction not intended based on the direction of the steering wheel. The computer then applies a slight tap of the brakes to put the vehicle back on course. Honda engineers said pressure can build up in the brakes and suddenly give way, bringing the vehicle to a brief screeching halt. Honda said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries as a result of the malfunction. It was made aware of the problem after complaints by 22 Odyssey owners.
