An anti-tuition hike rally by thousands of people in Montreal Tuesday took a violent turn with some allegedly assaulting police with snowballs, ice and rocks. Police said they made 10 arrests, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. Police moved to disperse after the protesters, organized by a militant student group called ASSE, made their way through downtown Montreal about 2 p.m. local time The (Montreal) Gazette reported some officers on horseback chased protesters through the streets. Several cars were damaged by the demonstrators, police said. The protesters were angry about plans to raise tuition about $70 a year, far below the $1,625 originally proposed, the newspaper said.
