China's grain stock capacity has surged to 100 times that of 1949, the year when the People's Republic of China was founded, the head of China's grain regulator said on Sunday.
Ren Zhengxiao, director of the State Administration of Grain, said that in 2013, China had around 19,000 grain storage companies with total capacity over 300 million tonnes. Ren made the remarks during an administration conference held in east China's Hangzhou.
China has built a national grain storage network based on four logistics hubs in Liaoning, Guangdong, Shanghai and Zhejiang, with granaries all around the country, Ren said.
He noted the network has been upgraded, with 78 percent of granaries installed with mechanical ventilation and 57 percent monitored by computers.
Like other developing countries, China has its own grain storage program and has been pursuing self-sufficiency to ensure food security.
